Baptism has been defined in many ways through the eyes of believers in various denominations. The painting focuses on the physical transformation through a visual viewpoint. .The Baptism , painted  from a physical viewpoint. As her old self remains trapped under the surface ( implied by the left hand pushing against the surface), Her right hand is attempting to  pull her back into  her old ways. Yes we are born again , however it is a continuous effort to stay above water and not fall into old ways.
